College of Chemistry, Chongqing Normal University
College of Chemistry is one of the earliest established departments of Chongqing Normal University and has a history over 70 years. At present, college of Chemistry offers three full-time undergraduate programs: Chemistry (teacher-training), Material Chemistry, and Polymer Materials and Engineering. A master's degree program in Chemistry as a first-level discipline, consisting of four second-level disciplines including Inorganic Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry, as well as a professional master's degree program in Chemical Education have also been constructed. The discipline of Chemistry is a key discipline in Chongqing during the 13th and 14th Five-Year Plans, which also entered the top 1% in the ESI global rankings in May 2023. The major of Chemistry is a constructing national first-class undergraduate program and a first-class undergraduate program in higher education in Chongqing. The discipline of Material Chemistry also entered the top 1% in the ESI global rankings in May 2024, and the major of Material Chemistry is a constructing first-class undergraduate program in Chongqing. In recent years, the college has received numerous honors, including the Advanced Party Organization in the Education System of Chongqing, and the Advanced Collective in the Education System of Chongqing.
College of Chemistry currently has over 70 faculty staffs, including over twenty professors and thirty associate professors. It has over 20 titles of provincial/ministerial-level talents, such as the Hundred Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, members of the Education Ministry's Teaching Steering Committee, Academic and Technical Leaders and Reserve Candidates in Chongqing, Leading Talents in Innovation and Entrepreneurship of Chongqing, Leading Talents and Young Top-notch Talents in Innovation of the Chongqing High-level Talent Support Program, Leading Experts of the Chongqing Youth Expert Workstation, Bayu Professors and Young Scholars, and so on. Many teachers have studied and worked abroad.
College of Chemistry has constructed seven provincial/ministerial-level scientific research platforms, including the Engineering Research Center for Active Substance Biotechnology (Ministry of Education), the Chongqing Key Laboratory of Green Catalysis Materials and Technology, and the Chongqing Key Laboratory of Inorganic Functional Materials. It also has two provincial/ministerial-level teaching practice platforms, including the Chongqing Higher Education Chemistry Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center etc. Additionally, the college has five provincial/ministerial-level innovation teams and groups, including the Inorganic Photoelectric Functional Materials Chongqing Innovative Entrepreneurship Demonstration Team, the Chongqing Postgraduate Supervisor Innovation Team, the Advanced Chemical Green Synthesis and Application Chongqing University Innovation Team, the Precision Nanosynthesis and Catalytic Application Chongqing University Innovation Research Group, and the Chongqing Youth Expert Workstation. In recent years, the teachers have been granted more than 120 research projects at the provincial/ministerial levels. Over 600 SCI research papers have been published in top journals such as Chem. Soc. Rev., Coord. Chem. Rev., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Nano Lett., and so on. They also have obtained over 80 authorized patents and published over 10 books (participated as chief editor or co-editor). The College focuses on applied basic research and technology transfer, with products such as "C01-MZ Catalyst Regeneration Special Agent" being approved as a high-tech product in Chongqing. They have also developed products such as the Ganhuangcao sobering plant beverage, "Gun Gun Hongtun" purple grass silicon oil rolling ball, and Coenzyme Q10 vitamin E soft capsules, which have achieved good economic benefits and social effects.
College of Chemistry has long been committed to educational and teaching reform, with a focus on the cultivation of outstanding high-school teachers and top-notch innovative talents. In recent years, the College has been granted more than 40 educational research and reform projects, including provincial/ministerial-level projects. More than 80 papers on educational reforming and seven textbooks have been published. Eight first-class courses and courses with ideological and political education at the provincial and university levels have been constructed. The teachers have won many significant awards and titles such as "Outstanding Young Teacher in Chongqing University", and "Teaching Star Award" in Chongqing Ordinary Undergraduate University.
College of Chemistry has long attached great importance to the cultivation of students' innovative and practical abilities. In recent years, students have been granted more than 60 national and provincial projects under the "College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Training Program". They have won numerous national and provincial awards, including first prizes in the National University Student Experimental Innovation Design Competition, the National Normal College Student Teaching Skills Competition, and the "Challenge Cup" National College Student Extracurricular Academic and Technological Works Competition. In recent years, students have published more than 400 high-level academic papers and have been granted more than 40 authorized invention patents. The postgraduate entrance examination rate of students has reached 50% comparing to 17% ten years ago.
College of Chemistry has been persisting in “two drives” in student cultivation, i.e. “the Party drives league construction” and “Party construction drives student-related work”, forming a new pattern of student-related work with special characteristics based on the practical conditions of the College. The Party member commitment system and Party member "1+1" activities have become brand activities of the College, which have ever been reported by media such as People's Daily and China Education Daily. Furthermore, the extracurricular science popularization projects of students from the College have ever been reported by CCTV, Xinhua News Agency, and other media.
